Kaj boste počeli

Having a signboard that says "Gakkari (disappointing) Udon" in front of the shop, my family runs a authentic Udon restaurant of the area. Why does it say disappointing? Because at the first glance, the Udon looks as simple as it could be. There are no toppings which makes Udon more delicious. However, the toppings were hidden under noodle, so do not worry, it is tasty after all. Also, this disappointing Udon is exclusively provided by our restaurant. Let's get into the kitchen where people are usually unable to get in, and make Udon together.

Before this hands on Udon cooking experience, we'll stop by
Sato Dojo, where Samurai used to train themselves in the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate. As a Kendo(Japanese swordmanship) learner, I can show you the highlight of the neighborhood.

My family runs local Udon restaurant in Hino area, where I was born and grown up. Also I'm doing a tour guide as my career (I take Japanese people overseas to explore many countries around the world). Through this experience I would like you to discover and explore nostalgic neighborhood which you can't find in central area of Tokyo.

Kje boste

Gathering at Hino Station (Chuo Line), I will take you to post-station town called Koshu Kaido. This is a nostalgic neighborhood with lots of shrines and Dojo(the hall where the sword player was trained). After that we'll head to my noodle restaurant.

This has been my third time to go on this experience. I did the experience first by myself and then two years later with family and now recently with friends. I always want people I know to do this experience cause I feel it gives real local atmosphere and authenticity that you just don’t get doing regular tourist things. I hope you will have a great time and enjoy getting to know this wonderful family!

Kenta's tour and udon making experience was excellent! Kenta is friendly and his family are very welcoming. Making udon the traditional way in their restaurant was so interesting and the meal at the end was even more delicious once I knew how much work went into it! I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in Japan or Japanese food in any way.

Awesome experience. The guide was really knowledgeable and was able to explain a lot about the culture that we didn’t understand. He took us to a temple and a kind of samurai hotel museum beforehand, and explained the history and cultural significance of both. Then, the udon making experience was awesome; the udon master/owner of the shop was really nice and patient. We got to eat the noodles we made, as well as tempura that we were taught to fry and some other appetizers and small dishes that our hosts prepared for us. Both my boyfriend and I left extremely happy, full, and with a lot more knowledge about making udon and tempura. All in all an amazing experience that both my boyfriend and I are really glad we signed up for!!

This experience is fantastic way to spend time outside of big city Tokyo. Getting to Hino station was easy. Kenta sent a message prior to meeting to see if we were okay and met us at the Hino train station right away. We walked through the nearby Hosenji and toured the Hino-shuku Honjin. Unexpected and lucky treat, we went to Takahata-Fudoson Kongo-Ji temple and watched a Goma ritual! This ceremony represents the burning of bonnou, which is the source of suffering, by Buddha’s fire of wisdom. We took pictures by the beautiful Pagoda and then Kenta also helped us with Omikuji (paper fortunes). We put our 100 yen coins in the box and I pulled a curse and tied my paper fortune and left it at the temple:( My husband pulled a future blessing and kept it. We then went to his family’s Udon shop where we were welcomed with tea, a little ball shaped sweet treat, and spicy “chips” covered in chocolate. Kenta’s parents then helped us put on cooking clothes and we were invited into the space dedicated for Udon making. We rolled and rolled the dough (prepared the day before) and cut it to make noodles. We also made some tempura. We ate everything we made (Hot Udon and Cold “disappointing” Udon with delicious ingredients hidden under the noodles) and even had additional appetizers we weren’t expecting. It was a delicious meal and a wonderful day that I hope many others get to experience. Kenta and his family are very kind and hospitable. Added bonus, we saw Mt Fuji on our train ride back to Tokyo!

This experience was as great the second time as it was the first. I brought my mother and uncle on this excursion this time. And any future family who come will be taken on this tour too! See you again in the future!

Wonderful experience! Kenta is a good guide. He introduced the valuable spots to me. For the udon making experience, it is interesting and fun. Kenta explained and demonstrated clearly. The restaurant is nice and the food is delicious. The “disappointing udon” surprised me a lot. It’s highly recommended. I have a nice trip and will come again. Thanks Kenta again for warm hospitality.
