Food Scene

If we seem obsessed with places to eat that is because THIS IS NEW ORLEANS!! Here are some of our favorite places to eat, mostly uptown and near by. We haven't listed many of the "famous" places, unless it's a favorite, because you will find out about those on your own. But in NOLA, the local neighborhood places can be every bit as great as the big names.
Just a neighborhood place with great, fresh po boys. Among the best in town, and our favorite. They get busy cause everything is made to order. Expect to wait or call in advance to order and pick up.

Great creole food in an uptown neighborhood that tourists don't find. Upscale, but not necessarily dressy. Call for a reservation - its small. One of our favorites. If they can't accommodate you, a block away is Patois- French, and really good, too. A "find."

The best locally made gelato in town. A classic, old time, family owned NOLA place in Mid-City. Also has great Italian bakery items and cappuccino. City Park is just wonderful and has so much is going on - a great place to go, with or without kids. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded and decimated the entire park, which is one of the largest in all of North America. Every building, hundreds of old oaks, and all its equipment were severely impacted. But, City Park has returned with vengeance, and is now so worth a visit. Not only is it a beautiful display of urban nature with its stately trees and ancient lagoons in the middle of mid-city, but so much cultural and recreational development has gone on there since 2005 - the Sculpture Garden, the Botanical Garden , the return of 2 golf courses, miniature golf, Storybook Land, the Children's Museum, and of course, The N.O. Museum of Arts. Oh, and be sure to have beignets and coffee at the old casino, just near the arch bridge and the bandstand, while you are there!

A lot of people don't realize that there is a National Park right in the NOLA metro area, where you can see and experience a beautifully preserved natural swamp. Check it out! "With more than 26,000 acres of wild Louisiana wetlands, the Barataria Preserve's hardwood forest, swamp, bayous, and marsh offer trails, picnic areas, fishing, hunting (in season and with permits), and wildlife viewing. Visitor center films and exhibits explain the wetlands habitat and current environmental challenges; ranger programs are offered daily. Programs at the environmental education center are available by reservation. Admission to the preserve and to most programs is free." The park Service also runs a French Quarter Victor's Center with Ranger-led talks.

This is the place to look and find live music in NOLA: https://www.wwoz.org/calendar/livewire-music WWOZ is a great radio station and website, where you can listen to NOLA music 24-7. But this LiveWire section lists all of the upcoming live music around the city, and is a must for those looking what to do and where to go.
Preservation Hall is famous, BUT, take a few minutes to look at this website called "A Closer Walk - New Orleans Music History, Block by Block" It is a terrific website: https://acloserwalknola.com It lists LOTS of places to visit in NOLA that are off the radar, but all relate to NOLA's amazing history and tradition of music. Take a look and maybe pursue a few spots, but, at least learn more about the tradition of music in the Crescent City/Big Easy!

Recently opened in 2021, a fascinating look at the role of the Jewish community in the south- something largely unknown to many from other parts of the country

Make NOMA a stop on your day at City Park - a nicely done, classic museum. Nice cafe, good rotating exhibits. Get out of the heat and 'get cultured' for a while! Then go rent a swan boat or walk thru the Sculpture Garden in City Park for the afternoon

Always on our list of recommended things to do when there is nice weather and you are going to spend the day at City Park - it will not disappoint. And see the Botanical Gardens, near by, before you head over for Beignets and Coffee in the old Casino

Magazine Streetwhich is 3 blocks from the house runs from downtown all the way, parallel to the river, to River Road at river bend and represents so much that is really NOLA- architecture, great food, unique shopping, and of course, the people. It is real - not there just for tourists, though you are welcome of course. Several different sections have great shopping and eating, most of them local places with few national brands. So, pick an area, and WALK, EAT, SHOP! Our place is close to a couple of great sections for this. You can take Magazine 'uptown' from Napoleon all the way to Audubon Park (about a 40 minute stroll), and do very well thank you. (That is our part of Magazine!) Or go downtown from Napoleon Ave, too. The most concentrated section of shopping and eating will be from Louisiana Ave to Washington Ave, and then again in the garden district, from Jackson Ave to Felicity.
