A smart lock is a wifi-enabled electronic lock that guests open with a code instead of a key. Smart lock integration is a new hosting tool that lets you connect compatible smart locks to your Airbnb listings. Hosts in North America who added smart lock integration in early testing have an average check-in rating of 4.96.*

Smart lock integration starts rolling out this spring for listings in the U.S and Canada. It’s available to Hosts with six or fewer listings and certain locks from Schlage. August and Yale devices will be added later this year.

Smart locks are a convenient way to help guests get inside your place easily. Smart lock integration with Airbnb automatically creates a unique door code for each new booking.

Smart lock integration also lets you:

• Manage check-ins remotely from your phone.
• Receive an in-app notification when guests arrive.
• Keep separate codes for yourself, Co-Hosts, and cleaners.
• Check your active door codes all in one place.

Smart locks are easy to install and connect to Airbnb. Smart lock integration is compatible with these locks:

• Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt
• Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt
• Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever

Schlage’s locks fit most doors 1⅜ to 1¾ inches thick, and the company makes special kits for doors 1⅞ to 2½ inches thick. Lever smart locks are for doors without deadbolts. 

The locks start at $270 USD when purchased from Schlage’s retail partner, which offers discounts to Airbnb Hosts. The kits include four AA batteries that you’ll have to replace periodically.

To install a smart lock, you’ll need a tape measure, a Phillips screwdriver, and a wireless internet connection. Installation typically takes less than an hour, and Schlage offers step-by-step instructions.

Manage your smart lock from the Arrival guide section of your Listings tab. First, update your check-in method to Smart lock if you haven’t already. Then, you’ll be able to connect a compatible lock to your Airbnb listing when smart lock integration is available in your location.

Guests receive their door code in an email right after they book, and they get a notification when it’s time to check in. They can also find the code and lock instructions in their reservation details on Airbnb.

Door codes are activated at check-in time and expire 30 minutes after checkout. You can manually adjust the timing and add a backup entry method in your Arrival guide.
