  • Guests with disabilities may require someone to assist them to fully participate in your in-person Experience

  • You can allow these access providers to join the guests they’re assisting at no additional cost

To fully participate in an in-person Airbnb Experience, a guest with a disability may need someone to assist them—for example, an interpreter for a guest who is d/Deaf or hard of hearing, or a personal care assistant for a wheelchair user. At Airbnb, we refer to that support person as an access provider.

You can update your pricing settings to allow access providers to join the guests they’re assisting at no additional cost. This is one way to help ensure that a variety of guests can join and enjoy your in-person Experience.

Some guests also may rely on service animals. You must allow a service animal to accompany its owner on an Experience (unless you are granted an exemption).

Welcoming access providers

Access providers may be called by different names around the world. For Airbnb Experiences, we consider an access provider to be an adult (age 18 or older) who regularly assists a person with a disability, mental illness, or long-term illness with their daily activities.

An access provider must be able to provide the guest with the assistance necessary to fully participate in the Experience. Here are some ways an access provider may support a guest:

  • Helping the guest get around the location of the Experience
  • Helping the guest communicate with the Host or other guests
  • Helping the guest with processes during a workshop or class
  • Helping the guest with eating, drinking, and personal care needs

Access providers who accompany a guest are not:

  • Active participants in the Experience without the booking guest
  • Friends or family who wish to tag along on an Experience
  • Childcare support such as a nanny, au pair, or babysitter

Because access providers aren’t paying to participate in your Experience, you don’t have to offer them their own supplies or equipment.

Showing up in search results

A person with disabilities may not be able to engage in your Experience without assistance. Updating your pricing settings to allow an access provider at no extra charge may make your Experience more accessible, which could help you attract more paying guests.

Guests searching specifically for Experiences with accessibility features can filter their results to only show listings that offer free admission to access providers. By updating your settings accordingly, you can make sure your Experience is included in these results.

Allowing service animals

It’s important to understand that service animals are not pets. A service animal is one that’s individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with disabilities.

As a Host, you can’t turn away a guest for having a service animal (unless you are granted an exemption). You also may not treat that guest differently from others by charging extra fees, using discriminatory language, or applying special rules.

You can ask guests not to bring emotional support animals on your Experience, except where applicable laws may require you to allow them, such as in California and New York.

Communicating with guests in advance

Remember that setting appropriate expectations is key to delighting guests and earning 5-star reviews, so it’s a good idea to communicate with your guests in advance.

Keep in mind that if your settings allow access providers at no cost, the extra headcount doesn’t appear in the guest’s booking confirmation. The reservation is for one person. The guest is prompted at checkout to message you with access provider info.

While messaging with the guest, you can sort out details like who will pay for the access provider’s expenses, such as subway fare or gallery admission. You may also choose to cover these expenses yourself.

Generally, you can expect one access provider per guest, but a guest may ask whether more assistance is possible. Consider updating your listing description to add any constraints for accommodating access providers or exemptions for allowing service animals, if you have them.
